Irving Oil Announces Getting Started In Curling For New Brunswick Students
Unique program introduces youth to curling in advance of international event
SAINT JOHN, NB — Irving Oil is announcing its sponsorship of a fun and engaging curling program for young students throughout southern New Brunswick. Getting Started in Curling gives more than 2500 students, between grades three and five, the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of curling and experience the excitement of a live championship curling draw. The program takes place leading up to and throughout the Women’s World Curling Championships, hosted in Saint John starting later this week.
“Through team sport, children can have fun while learning the life lessons of teamwork, fair play and perseverance; the same values we uphold here at Irving Oil,” says Kevin Scott, Chief Human Resources Officer at Irving Oil. “It’s why we’re proud to sponsor this program in support of the Women’s World Curling Championships.”
Under the guidance of a volunteer group of experienced curlers, Getting Started in Curling teaches students the fundamentals of curling using an indoor curling kit. In addition, participating schools have adopted one of the countries competing in the tournament and built their respective country into their learning curriculum for the year. Students have also created eight-foot by four-foot murals about their adoptive country that will be displayed in the pedway leading to Harbour Station for the duration of the tournament. Participating students have also received one complimentary pass to attend a draw during the championship.
“Curling is an exciting sport and getting involved at a young age can encourage youth to start down the road of healthy living”, says Jeff Lacey, Chair of the Ford Woman’s World Curling host committee. “With Irving Oil’s help, we’ve been able to reach a new audience and introduce this sport to students who otherwise may not get to experience the thrill of a draw.”
Fifteen schools throughout the Anglophone South School District of New Brunswick are taking part in the Getting Started in Curling program.
The Women’s World Curling Championships will welcome 12 teams from across the world to Harbour Station in Saint John, N.B., between March 15th and 23rd.
