Q: When will I hear back on the status of my application?

A: Our team is committed to carefully reviewing all the applications we receive. Depending on the volume or the hiring priority, it may take a week or more for you to receive an update on the status of your application.

Q: How will I know when the status of my application changes?

A: As your application moves through our recruitment process, your status will be updated and can be viewed at any time by logging into your own personal Candidate Home page.

Q: I haven’t heard back in a few days. What should I do?

A: Depending on the opportunity, it can take a few weeks to find the right person. We try to reach out at least once a week to let you know where we are in the process but understand that there may be a large number of people who apply for a single career opportunity.

Q: I submitted my application but did not receive a confirmation email. Can you confirm that my application has been received?

A: You will not receive a confirmation email, however, you can check that we received your application by logging into your own personal Candidate Home page and checking the status of your application.

Q: What’s involved in your screening process?

A: Your application will be reviewed and screened against skills, qualifications and hiring criteria outlined in the job posting. Our screening process includes a review of your education, experience, skills and answers to the screening questions asked through the online application process and a telephone screen. 

If you best match our requirements, you will be contacted via phone and/or email for the next phase of the recruitment process.

Q: What does the interview and assessment phase of the recruitment process entail?

A: Our interviews are conducted by Human Resources, the Hiring Manager and select others. Additionally, we may ask you to participate in skills or aptitude assessment testing. All assessments are designed to evaluate your job-related proficiency.

You may be asked to provide us with the contact information from previous managers who will act as your references. 

We recognize that students are the future of our business; therefore, we aim to provide meaningful work through mentorship and development opportunities.

Currently, we support students and their education by offering various scholarships, co-op placements, MBA internships, a CPA training program and summer student opportunities.

Co-Op Training Program

Co-op students play an integral role and spur innovative ideas in many of our business lines.

We ensure that our students are continually learning in a supportive and collaborative environment, while receiving valuable work experience and development opportunities.

Co-op students can join us to gain experience in business, accounting, marketing, finance, engineering or IT during this paid work term, which can last four, eight, 12 or 16 months.

MBA Internship

At Irving Oil, we offer unique and rewarding placements to our Masters in Business Administration (MBA) students. Our goal is to satisfy program requirements, while also giving students the opportunity to contribute new ideas and work alongside key departments within our organization. We want students who will have a positive impact. MBA student projects have been implemented across our business.

Examples of past MBA placements by department include Supply Management, Financial Planning & Analysis, Business Development and Supply Chain. The length of term is dependent on the student’s program requirements, with terms ranging from nine weeks to four months.

Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Training Program
Irving Oil takes pride in our partnership with CPA Atlantic School of Business to provide current and new employees with the practical experience and mentorship required to achieve a CPA designation. Through our Pre-Approved Program (PPR), CPA candidates are offered a wide range of opportunities to achieve the core, depth and breadth of experience required to complete their designation and gain valuable strategic management and financial expertise.

We also support new and existing employees wishing to acquire their CPA designation via the CPA’s experience verification route. CPA candidates play an integral role here, and candidates selected for our program can expect to continually learn and build their competencies while working with other professionals in a supportive and collaborative environment.

• How to apply: Irving Oil holds CPA information sessions at universities in September for fall recruitment. Sessions are held at UNB Fredericton and Saint John, Mount Allison, Dalhousie, St. Mary’s and Acadia campuses.  For more information on our CPA Program and other opportunities, please visit your campus’ career office to obtain dates for our session at your university, or check our website early in September for our CPA Candidate job postings.

Summer students

Our summer students get to experience what it’s like to work for an international company with local roots. They perform general work that may lead to a co-op work term in the future. Consideration for these positions is given to students who are enrolled in full-time studies at a post-secondary institution and plan to return to their studies immediately following the work term, or those who require a work term to graduate.

School programming

Development Student positions are temporary, four-, eight- or 12-month opportunities for students to gain training and experience directly related to their academic program or skills training at the post-secondary level. Consideration for these positions is only given to students who are currently enrolled in full-time studies at a post-secondary institution and plan to return to their studies immediately following the work term, or those who require a work term to graduate.

Fraudulent emails typically look authentic, with details of the employment opportunity, such as job description, compensation and other benefits. Yes, we have plenty!

• Read everything on our site, specifically anything relating to our core values. They drive a lot of what we do around here and how we do things, so it’s important to be familiar with them.
• Research what we’ve been up to lately in the news, research new initiatives or products we're introducing to the public, and research the person you are interviewing with so you can connect with them. It's all available for you to find.
• Be able to answer, "Why Irving Oil?" as it's a big way we distinguish candidates from one another.
• In your interview, focus on culture and teamwork − but also be prepared to elaborate on what you can bring to the table (your accomplishments, how you can contribute and make an impact on the team).
• Your interview will be with people you may work with directly AND indirectly. Be ready to speak to how you can contribute to Irving Oil outside of your own department.
• Be transparent. 
• If you are interviewing on the phone or via Teams, make sure you’re in a quiet spot with reliable reception or internet connection. Nothing can throw off an interview more than constant background noise or multiple apologies for dropping in and out of the interview.
• Send a brief and sincere thank you note or email after an interview, detailing why you're excited and citing specifics from the interview. Not only is it a kind gesture, it shows your interest in the job opportunity.

• If you use your phone for a video call, make sure to set it on a solid surface (rather than holding it). This way the interviewer won’t be distracted by shaking.

• Prepare! Think of examples from your professional life to demonstrate how you meet the position’s criteria. You can use these examples to show how you have demonstrated the types of behaviour, we’re looking for (such as problem solving, analytical ability, perseverance, presentation skills, etc.). When giving examples, use the S.T.A.R interview response method to break down your example into a specific Situation, Task, Action and Result.

• Take a few minutes prior to your virtual interview to ensure your camera and microphone are working.

Q: If I apply for more than one position, will I be considered for both?

A: Yes, you will be considered for all positions applied to.

Q: I wanted to apply for a position that I saw here, but now it's not listed. May I still apply?

A: We leave roles open as long as we can to ensure we find the right candidate. But once we un-list the job opportunity, it means we were successful in our search and filled the position.

Q: Can you tell me the expected start date and salary range for this position?

A: If we offer you the role, we will disclose the salary during the contract discussion. It would also be best to ask about the start date at this time.

Q: I wasn’t selected for a position. What do I do now?

A: Remain optimistic! You can still apply for other positions you're interested in. You can also take the opportunity to gain experiences elsewhere and revamp your résumé. You may be the right person for an opportunity with us in the future.
